Villages-COM Mentoring & Interest Groups

 

 

Women in Medicine and Science (WIMS) will be offering monthly groups. The purpose of the groups is to provide a forum for discussion of the issues and opportunities impacting faculty, especially women and to foster networks and support.  *Villages are open to all faculty in the UF HSC. Villages recycle every 4 months (Jan, May, September).

Active Villages

Promotion and Tenure Village

Host: Terrie Vasilopoulos

When: 1 Thursday a month, 4 PM

Starts: March 9th, 4 PM

Whine and Cheers Village

Host: Liz Brownlee, Crissy Zeretske

When: 1 Monday a month, 5:30 PM

Starts: Feb 27th, 5:30 PM

Where: Venue will change monthly

What:  A monthly girls’ night out to discuss challenges and celebrate our wins.  The venue will change monthly and will be off campus at a venue with food and beverages available for purchase. There will be a topic of the month, and conversation can start there and go to any topic that naturally arises. 

 

Women in Research Village 

Host: Gemma Casadesus, Paola Giusti Rodriguez

When: Once a month – afternoon, but will poll to determine the interest

Starts: May 2023

Where: To be Announced

What: A monthly topic meeting relevant to our paths and experiences as research scientists/doctors.  Topics ae broad and include diverse aspects and conflicts that women in research encounter.  Topics will include articles for discussion followed by free format chats.  A syllabus will be provided during the first meeting. 

 

Parenting – (It takes a) Village

Host: Melissa Turley, Erin Bruce

When: 4 times yearly, Friday during lunchtime.  More information to come. 

Starts: February 10th, 12-1

Where: Room 331 Harrell Medical Education Building

What:  Book club format.  The plan is to read 3-4 books during the course of the year.  Meetings will occur during lunchtime. Participants are encouraged but not required to read the book.  There will also be a discussion board option for continued conversation, and sharing parenting wins, losses, and dilemmas with the village. 

     An initial welcome/interest meeting is planned for February 10th from 12 pm to 1 pm in room 331.  The next meeting will be in March to discuss the first book. The first book will be “Hunt, Gather, Parent: What Ancient Cultures Can Teach Us About the Lost Art of Raising Happy, Helpful Little Humans” by Michaeleen Doucleff.
